Competency Based Assessment : An Example

Competency based assessment using UEENEEG102A (A.C.) as an example

I have developed over the past three (3) years a competency based assessment approach for A.C. that other teacher may find interesting and  helpful.

I have developed a series of four (4) short 15 minute videos that explain how I deliver A.C. and the competency based assessment approach I have developed.

As part of this website I have also provided the documents in “Word” format so you can adjust then to your context.

The approach is truly competency based and no percentage marks are used anywhere.  The student must simply get get every aspect of the evidence correct on “more than one occasions” as stipulated in the Unit range statement.

As always my approach is not perfect and I appreciate all feedback of any kind.

Dr Kenneth Meyer

This is video 1 of 4. The run time is 14 minutes.

The video covers;

  1. The learning expectations for the Unit (A.C.).
  2. The impacts that previous learning will have on the learning on A.C.
  3. The context of the Unit and the extent of the learning and assessment.

This is video 2 of 4. The run time is 16 minutes.

The video covers;

  1. The Subject/Study Guide. Volume of learning, Assessment and Study requirements.
  2. The big picture of assessment and learning.

This is video 3 of 4. The run time is 15 minutes.

The video covers;

  1. Face-to-face delivery of competency based assessment. Part A.
  2. Competency Based Assessment in detail. Prat A.

This is video 4 of 4. The run time is 16 minutes.

The video covers;

  1. Face-to-face delivery of competency based assessment. Part B.
  2. Competency Based Assessment in detail. Part B.

Now that you have watched the video series, all the following are copies of the resources that I have developed.

My only request is that you acknowledge the sources and direct your students to “wired4imagination.com” for many trades based videos that will help their learning.

The resources provided below are; Setting Expectations Powerpoints, A.C. diagnostic assessment with marking guide as a Word Doc., Subjects/Study Guide as a Word Doc., Tutorial Exercise booklet as a Word Doc., Knowledge Assessment #3 as aWord Doc., Knowledge assessment#1 & #2 as Word Docs. and finally as Skills assessment booklet as a Word doc.

Setting Expectations

This PowerPoint presentation reminds students that the link between “eye” and “hand” is one of the most powerful ways of learning and is why taking your own notes & drawings is very important.

Setting the bigger picture of what the learning and assessment will involve is very important to adult learners. This presentation does this from a negative perspective and then from a positive perspective describing the learning resources that are available and how to use and access them.

A.C. Diagnostic Assessment

This is just a very rough diagnostic I put together so students would have some understanding of “gaps” that may still exist in their learning from prerequisite units. I provide the test paper based with a bright coloured pen I provide. Often hot pink because there is a high chance they dont have this colour.

This is a simple word based test that covers those skills and knowledge that will be re-used in A.C. Click to download.

Pre AC Test KM

I now provide another brightly coloured pen, normally green for self marking. The answer guide I then put on the digital projector and work through the answers.  After marking we discuss the results, where the gaps are and how the student must go about filling the gaps.

Subject / Study Guide

The Subject / Study Guide is a Word document you can modify to your particular context. I provide this only as a guide to how CBA can be achieved in a complex Unit with lots of maths, physics and not use a percentage approach to determine success.

Tutorial Exercise Booklet

For many teachers that maybe used to using the TAFE NSW resources, I have developed my own “Tutorial Exercises” resource that follows my delivery program. (See the Subject/Study Guide). I use the “Tutorial Exercises” in three ways. 1. I do some of the exercises in class to consolidate the days learning. 2. I assign any exercises not completed as homework. Semi-forced study. 3. Used as supplementary evidence if one answer is wrong in an assessment “Topic” and Tutorial exercise are all complete and correct. I mark their Tutorial Exercise books every week if submitted. This is the students responsibility.

Knowledge Assessment #3 (KA#3)

The Knowledge Assessment #3 (KA#3) is simply forced study.

The assessment is openbook and open time within the limits of the semester. I give my students until week 17 to complete it and I mark the KA#3 every week if submitted. I have made a quick mark transparency for each week as a overlay that makes marking very easy.

AC UEENEEG102A KA#3 Student Version V3

The KA#3 marking guide includes the answers and where the answers are found in the textbook.

My students must not only provide the correct answers, but show working and reference the correct textbook page.

This forces then to deeply engage the study, which sets them up for ultimate success in the Unit.

Because this is an open web-site I am not directly providing the marking guide.

If you email me from within your RTO with contact details of your Head Teacher (Phone or email), after verifying you are a Tech teacher, I will email you a copy of the marking guide.

Knowledge Assessments

As above, because this is an open website I will only provide my assessments to actual Teach Teachers.

I have developed paper based assessments for what I call KA#1 and KA#2. See the Subject/Study Guide for what is covered in each assessment. I also have an “A” version and a “B” version of each paper for the purpose of “re-sits”.

Also note; that my approach can also be used with Energy Space assessments. There are of course available from Energy Space which I highly recommend.

Email me with your contact details and your Head Teacher details and I will send you the four assessment documents.

I like Energy Space assessments for many reasons, but being an “online” assessment sometimes feedback can be difficult.

So I have developed a set of four (4) feedback forms that can be used with Energy Space or my assessment tools.

The feedback tools provide information to the student and employer in three areas per Topic on a lykit scale. That is General Knowledge, Clacs and Physics. There is also an area for comments, I normally indicate how many answers they got incorrect in the Topic.  Also if a re-sit is required.

Skills Assessments (SA#1-#3)

Skills Assessments in A.C. are applied knowledge.

I have developed my own Skills Assessments, that are basically similar to those found in TAFE NSW and Energy Space. I have simply tuned them to better reflect competency based assessment.

I have not supplied a marking guide because the resources of particular RTO’s vary as to what components they use in assessments.
